Alma Mater Lookbook

New Lookbook guys!

I released my last two lookbooks, “Top Button” and “Palm Wine and Teacups” back in 2014, so it’s been a while!

As always, Friday Born’s Collections are all about mixing contemporary with traditional, and this time I was inspired by recently graduating from uni, and hence named it ‘Alma Mater’.

The collection has a really preppy feel, with some direct collegiate references, such as the ‘est 1957’ jersey and the kente pinafore. I also loved the fabrics I sourced, in particular, the Great-Britain-themed kente in blue, red and white.

Double E studios, once again, smashed the photography and editing, and really helped to get my theme across with the set. My models, Raquel Okine, Seyi Onuga and Peter Essien slayed in front of the camera and my make-up artist, Eileen Ceokorie made them look perfect.

I really hope you guys like the lookbook! All the items are available for purchase here.

African Fashion Week London 2014

Last weekend, the fourth annual African Fashion Week London was held in Kensington Olympia.

Caitlin Leslie of at Farfetch.com invited me along with two of my favourite African fashion/lifestyle bloggers – Mary of Pop Goes Fashion and Louisa of Afroblush. It was so nice to finally meet them, after reading their blogs for such a long time! We had VIP tickets so had the most amazing front row seats.

Overall, I thought the fashion shows were generally impressive and the day was pretty well organised. There was a LOT of variety, and it was great to see so many different designers portray African fashion in their own unique way. As always, there was a really cool vibe and lots of really beautiful clothes and accessories for sale at the stalls.

Top Button

I released my menswear lookbook last week, and obviously couldn’t leave the females out!

This collection is kinda androgynous, but still has quite a few girly items with classic silhouettes. I’ve always loved shirts (and often get teased for having my top button done up at all times!), and so I remixed what is usually thought of as a male item of clothing and built the collection around that.

Photography and editing were done by Double E Studios, who did an amazing job!

Have a look at the pics below, hope you guys like it!

With love,

Afrogala 2014

Every year, my university’s African Caribbean Society (ACS) puts on a cultural show, Afrogala. So many universities do the same, and I’ve showcased Friday Born at a lot of them (King’s College, UCL, St Georges, Royal Holloway, Southampton, Liverpool) but OBVIOUSLY my university puts on the best show *sips tea*

No but in all seriousness, Afrogala will always have a special place in my heart because my ACS is responsible for most of the fun I had in my first three years in uni. Between 2010 and 2012, I was always acting and/or dancing throughout the show, and I directed it in 2011. Now I feel too old to actually be up on stage, it’s nice to still be able to be involved by showcasing Friday Born Designs.

This year, I gave the audience the first peak of the new collection, have a look at some of the pictures below.

African Fashion Week London

So this Saturday I headed down to Brick Lane for the third annual African Fashion Week London.

Let me use this opportunity to do a cheeky outfit post:

(the dungaree dress is for sale on ASOS marketplace by the way *shameless plug*)

But yes, back to African Fashion Week London. This was my first time attending because I’ve annoyingly been out of the country on the day the past two years. To be honest, I had heard mixed reviews about the previous years and there were some negative comments about the organisation of the show, especially of the first event in 2011. I can honestly say that I was really impressed with the running of the event. All the shows looked really professional and there were no awkward waits where it’s clear that someone isn’t ready. All the staff were really friendly and all the African-inspired stalls were beautifully decorated and stocked with everything from kente bags to mud print lamp shades. Jollof and curry goat were even in attendance.

I saw some absolutely stunning designs, and it was a beautiful “I’m so proud to be African” moment *sings*

Here are a few pics of the shows. My favourite (and I think a lot of people’s favourite) was Baah by Jessica Baah. This is the second time I’ve seen her in a fashion show and I’ve been blown away each time. Ella & Gabby’s solo show was also amazing.
